April 2014

Join us for Green Sky Thinking Week

We are proud to be supporters once again of Green Sky Thinking week and will be hosting an event on Wednesday 30th April.

Islington: Developing a Green Hub

London’s ability to thrive as a successful world city is being challenged (amongst other things) by an increasing population, the extremes of climate change, and finite resources. With 90% of our city already built, it is essential that our existing buildings and the urban environment are adapted to cope with the challenges ahead and we maintain a sustainable city.

What is the value of sustainability? Is it just about resource efficiency and carbon reduction or can it also improve the environment, promote social cohesion, personal well being, and create jobs and opportunities for green businesses?

With speakers from:
Islington Council – talking about a recently completed project to retrofit twelve no. 4 and 5 storey estate blocks with external solid wall insulation.
Conisbee Infrastructure Team – Sustainable Urban Drainage – a discussion on the benefits of SUDS, what are they, how they are implemented and why a holistic approach will help reduce flooding across the UK.
Green Roof Shelters – talking about habitat creation, and low maintenance native planting. Showing examples of bio-diverse – cycle shelters in Islington, bin shelters in South Wales and outdoor classrooms across the country.
Islington Sustainable Energy Partnership – sharing highlights of a recent review of the green economy in Islington and exploring whether the borough might be a Hub for green growth.
